Eating out in a restaurant comes with its convenience. You don’t have to walk into the grocery store after a tiring day and you do not have to wash utensils after cooking. That is why I love it when I pass through my favourite joint, Chick-fil-A. It is just a few blocks from where I stay.

If you have a chance to dine out, you should check this place out. If you have already done so, you will agree with me that you can never go wrong with them. That is because they have what you need your body to be full and functioning the whole day.

Am talking about their dishes that are finger licking good and affordable. They are famous for their famous grilled chicken sandwich, chicken waffles, chick-fil-n chicken strips, and their milkshakes too. I love it when I walk into their premises. I look forward to the next dish to taste.

They have many dishes for you to choose from on their menu. When you order for some, they will make it fresh and serve you within no time. What I love most is that their menu has details about the ingredients of the dish and the calories content. You get to know what you are having in details.

Do they have healthy dishes?

That is the first question that I asked myself when I came in for their food this year. That is because I made a decision of losing the extra pound I have. It is because of indulging during the festive season last year. To my surprise, they do have healthy choices that you can have.

Their menu aids you in counting the calories. That way, you are able to choose a combination that will have fewer calories.  They also have salad servings. It is a reason that has made me stick to the premises until now. They have wonderful delicious salad dishes that you will enjoy and lose weight.

A salad is a combination of fruits and vegetables. It is to make you full yet give you all the nutrients you need for your body to function. Yes, it is truly a salad should have all elements of a balanced diet, but who thought you can ever have corns in a salad. It is weird, right? Discovering the salad was a good start for me. It gave me a choice of eating healthy to lose weight. The good thing about the salad is that you get to have a spicy dish that is low in calories. I had to know how to make it at home, something I was afraid to do.

It is after realizing sometimes I am not in the mood of going out or I want to have the dish on Sunday. What I must warn you is that the dish requires time and effort. That is because it involves the following steps;

  • Marinating and grilling the chicken.
  • Grilling the corn.
  • Roasting the pumpkin seeds.
  • Making the dressing.
  • Making the tortilla strips.

Ingredients for making the Chick-fil-A southwest salad

Chicken

  • 1½ to 2 pounds of breast chicken.
  • 1½-tablespoon paprika.
  • ½-tablespoon chilli
  • ½-tablespoon cayenne pepper.
  • 2-tablespoon salt.
  • Zest of the lime.
  • 2-tablespoon olive oil.

Corn

  • 2 ears of corn.
  • Olive oil.
  • Chilli

Pumpkin seeds

  • 1-cup pumpkin seeds.
  • 2-tablespoon chilli
  • 1-tablespoon salt.
  • 1-tablespoon lime juice.

Tortilla Strips

  • 5 corn tortilla.
  • 2-tablespoon olive oil.
  • 1-tablespoon salt.

Creamy salsa dressing

  • 1-cup Greek yorgut2 tablespoon mayonnaise.
  • 1 green onion.
  • 2-tablespoon cilantro- chopped.
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

Salad

  • 1-cup black beans –drained.
  • 1 poblano chilly.
  • 1 bell pepper chilly.
  • 1-cup Monterey jack
  • 1 cup of shredded carrot.
  • 1-pint grape tomatoes.
  • 2 cup of shredded red cabbage.
  • 4 cups romaine lettuce.

Procedure on how to make Chick-fil-A southwest salad

  1. In a bowl, combine the chicken breast, paprika, chilli powder, cayenne pepper, salt, the lime, and the olive oil. Mix ell for it to coat the chicken breast. Marinate it for 30-1 hour as you prepare the other ingredients.
  2. Preheat the oven or the grill. Rub the corn comb with the olive oil and roast in a grill or oven until it is evenly brown and soft. Remove the corn from the comb and put pepper in it, set aside.
  3. Whisk all the ingredients for making the salsa dressing together. Using the salt and pepper, season to taste then put it aside.
  4. Heat the oven again at 350 degrees. Cut the corn tortilla into even strips. Coat them with olive oil and sprinkle some salt. Put them on a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes or until they are crispy and ready.
  5. For the pumpkin seeds, coat them with lime juice then season them it pepper and salt. Put them in the oven to roast for 5 minutes until they are light in colour.
  6. Once the marinating time is off, remove the chicken breasts, and coat them with olive oil. Grill them or put them in an oven for them to cook for 4-5 minutes at 165 degrees.
  7. It is time to start placing your bowl. In a large bowl, place your greens. Next, place the corns, peppers, the black beans, tomatoes, carrots, the cheese, cabbage, pepitas, and the tortilla strips.
  8. Remove the chicken from the grill and slice them in 1/8 inches small pieces. Place on top of the ingredients and pour the salsa dressing on top. Your salad is ready.
  9. Enjoy your salad!

At Chick-fil-a, you can have the southwest salad with chicken nuggets, chicken waffles or you can choose to have it on its own. You also have a lot of dressing for you to choose from. The reason why I prefer salsa dressing is the low calories it has.

Choosing to eats salads does not mean you should have a boring dish. You can have a spicy dish full of ingredients that are nutritious for you to enjoy. Chick-fil-A southwest salad is the salad you need to order to enjoy flavours and low calories that comes with it.
